What Are Carotenoids?
Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments which are synthesized by plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria. There are more than 600 types of carotenoids, the most common ones being beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene. Carotenoids are what give many yellow, orange and red plants their colour. Carotenoids help plants absorb light energy for use in photosynthesis.
They are also a very important antioxidant. Antioxidants help the body fight free radicles which can damage cells. Carotenoids also have anti-inflammatory and immune health benefits. For carotenoids to be utilized fully, they must be consumed with fat to help the body absorb them.
What are good sources of Carotenoids?
The main sources of carotenoids in the diet are fruits and vegetables such as carrots, peppers, mangos, spinach, kale, and tomatoes.
