Vitamin B Supplements

The B vitamins are a group of water-soluble nutrients with different roles in the body. Although they're often discussed together, vitamin B isn't one single vitamin – the group includes several different nutrients, from thiamine (B1) and niacin (B3) to folate (B9) and vitamin B12.

At Evergreen, you can shop individual B vitamin supplements as well as Vitamin B Complex formulas that combine several B vitamins in one supplement.

What Are the B Vitamins?

There are eight recognised B vitamins:

  • Vitamin B1 – Thiamine
  • Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin
  • Vitamin B3 – Niacin
  • Vitamin B5 – Pantothenic Acid
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B7 – Biotin
  • Vitamin B9 – Folate/Folic Acid
  • Vitamin B12 – Cobalamin

You'll sometimes see other nutrients described using B-vitamin numbers too. For example, inositol is commonly called although it isn't officially classified as an essential vitamin.

What Do B Vitamins Do?

Different B vitamins have different functions, so it's more useful to look at them individually than to think of “vitamin B” as having one particular benefit.

Several B vitamins contribute to normal energy metabolism, while certain B vitamins also support normal nervous system and psychological function.

Some, including vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and folate, can also contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

This doesn't mean that taking more B vitamins will automatically give you more energy. Supplements are intended to complement your diet and are most useful when they meet an individual nutritional need.

Which Vitamin B Supplement Should I Choose?

The right option depends on whether you're looking for one particular B vitamin or a combination.

Vitamin B Complex

A Vitamin B Complex supplement combines several B vitamins in one formula.

Formulas vary considerably. Some provide all eight recognised B vitamins, while others combine selected B vitamins with additional nutrients. You'll also find methylated, activated, wholefood and liquid B complex formulas.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 supplements are available in tablets, capsules, lozenges, liquids and sprays, with different forms including methylcobalamin.

Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism, nervous system function and red blood cell formation, as well as helping to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamin B12 is particularly important for people following vegan diets because it isn't naturally present in plant foods.

Vitamin B3 – Niacin

Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, contributes to normal energy metabolism, nervous system function and psychological function. It also helps maintain normal skin and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamin B3 supplements come in different forms, including nicotinic acid and nicotinamide or niacinamide.

Vitamin B9 – Folate & Folic Acid

Folate, or vitamin B9, contributes to normal blood formation, psychological function and maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.

Supplements may contain folic acid or other forms of folate, including 5-MTHF or methylfolate.

Inositol – Often Called Vitamin B8

Although inositol is frequently referred to as vitamin B8, it isn't officially classified as an essential B vitamin because the body can produce it.

Myo-inositol is one of the most common forms found in supplements, with powders and capsules available alongside combination formulas.

Biotin – Vitamin B7

Biotin, or vitamin B7, contributes to normal energy metabolism and the maintenance of normal hair and skin.

Biotin can be found as an individual supplement as well as in B complex, multivitamin and beauty-focused formulas.

B Complex or Individual B Vitamins?

A B complex can be convenient if you're looking for several B vitamins together, while an individual supplement allows you to focus on one particular nutrient.

For example, someone specifically looking for B12 can choose the form and strength they prefer without necessarily taking additional B vitamins.

Check the complete nutritional information when comparing supplements, particularly if you're already taking a multivitamin or another product containing B vitamins.

What Foods Contain B Vitamins?

B vitamins are found across a wide range of foods rather than one particular food group.

Sources include meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, alongside wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables. The foods providing each individual B vitamin vary.

Vitamin B12 is an important exception for people following a vegan diet because it's naturally found mainly in animal-derived foods. Vegans therefore need reliable sources from fortified foods or supplements.

Choosing a Vitamin B Supplement

When comparing B vitamin supplements, consider:

  • Which B vitamins are included – one individual nutrient or several?
  • The amount per serving – formulations can vary significantly.
  • The form of the vitamin – particularly for nutrients such as B12, B9 and B3.
  • Supplement format – tablets and capsules aren't the only options; liquids, powders, sprays and lozenges are also available.
  • Your other supplements – check multivitamins and other formulas to avoid unnecessarily doubling up.

If you're unsure which B vitamin is appropriate for you, speak to a healthcare professional for individual advice.
