What Is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder traditionally associated with Japan. Unlike a regular cup of green tea, where the leaves are steeped and removed, Matcha powder is whisked directly into water, so the prepared drink contains the powdered tea leaf itself.
Matcha is known for its distinctive vibrant green colour and fresh, slightly savoury flavour.

Choosing a Matcha Powder
Not every Matcha powder is the same. Colour, flavour, texture, origin and intended use can all vary, so it's worth considering how you plan to use your Matcha before choosing one.
Ceremonial Matcha is generally used to describe high-quality Matcha intended to be whisked with water and enjoyed on its own. It typically has a fine texture and smooth flavour.
Everyday or premium Matcha can be a versatile choice for regular drinking and Matcha lattes.
Matcha for cooking and baking may have a stronger flavour that works well when combined with other ingredients.
There isn't an official universal grading system for Matcha, so terms such as “ceremonial grade” aren't the only indication of quality. Look at the individual product's origin, ingredients and recommended use when comparing your options.
Organic Matcha
You'll also find a selection of organic Matcha powders within our range.
If choosing organic Matcha is important to you, check the individual product for its organic certification rather than assuming that all Matcha is organically produced.
Matcha Powder or Matcha Tea Bags?
Traditional Matcha is a powder that's whisked directly into water. You'll also find green tea bags and loose-leaf teas blended with Matcha.
These offer a different experience from drinking pure Matcha powder but can be a convenient way to enjoy Matcha alongside green tea and other ingredients.
How Do You Make Matcha?
Traditionally, Matcha powder is whisked with warm water until smooth and lightly frothy. A bamboo Matcha whisk can help create the characteristic texture, although there are other ways to prepare it at home.
Matcha can also be combined with your favourite milk or plant-based alternative to make a Matcha latte, or added to smoothies, baking and other recipes.

Does Matcha Contain Caffeine?
Yes. Matcha is made from green tea and naturally contains caffeine, although the amount can vary depending on the product and how much powder you use.
If you're sensitive to caffeine, check the individual product information and consider when and how much Matcha you drink.
