Iron is important in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body and give us energy. Women are at risk of low iron due to menstruation and not eating enough iron-rich foods. Recent food consumption surveys suggested that 48% of Irish women could be at risk of iron deficiency.
You can get iron from a number of food sources, including red meat, beans (red kidney beans, edamame beans and chickpeas), nuts, dried fruit and fortified breakfast cereals. It is also possible to increase your iron levels using an iron supplement specifically formulated for women.
