What is Iron?

Iron is important in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. 

A common Iron deficiency is anemia which is a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues.

Without enough iron, your body can't produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin). As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath. Women, long distance runners and those who frequently donate blood are most at risk of an iron deficiency. 

You can usually correct iron deficiency anemia with iron supplementation. 

What are good sources of Iron?

Iron has a number of food sources, including red meat, beans, such as red kidney beans, edamame beans and chickpeas, nuts, dried fruit, fortified breakfast cereals and supplementation.
