Sugar

Sugar

Evergreen Healthfoods have a wide selection of sugar. Many of these products can be used as a sugar alternative as a healthier option or reduce your calorie intake.

Natural Caster Unrefined Cane Sugar is an alternative to refined white caster sugar. It has a light texture and an almost buttery like taste. This golden caster sugar is perfect for use in baking, especially meringues, sponge cakes, shortbreads and pavlovas. Unrefined caster sugars have a richer flavour and a more natural colour as it has undergone very minimal processing.

If you wish to create a caramel flavoured baked good or add some sweetness to a drink or dessert, you should try rapadura sugar. Essentially, it is derived from the dehydrated juice of cane sugar. It is completely unrefined and has a distinct caramel flavour. It is also often used as an alternative sweetener for drinks and other foods. It offers nutritious properties too, as it naturally contains trace elements.

Organic Coconut Palm Sugar is made from the sap that is extracted from the coconut tree. It is considered to be an excellent, healthy substitute for cane sugar. Coconut palm sugar is high in fibre and low in the glycemic index (GI index). Unlike cane sugar, coconut palm sugar is not full of empty calories and contains essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

The natural sweetener is also thought to have less impact on your blood sugar levels than other more convention sugars. High blood sugar levels can lead to a sugar rush and a subsequent crash. This natural sweetener has a caramel-like taste, which is not as sickly as regular cane sugar. It is similar in taste to brown sugar.

This product can be substituted for regular sugar quite easily. It can be used in baking and in hot and cold drinks. It is less sweet than cane sugar, but with more flavour so depending on your taste up to 25% less coconut palm sugar can be used. It is also much more environmentally friendly that sugar cane as coconut sugar palm trees produce an average of 50-75% more sugar per acre, using only a fifth of the resources.
