Vegan Omega 3 Supplements
Looking for Omega 3 without fish oil? Vegan Omega 3 supplements provide plant-based alternatives to traditional marine fish oils, with options including algae-derived DHA and EPA alongside formulas containing plant sources of Omega fatty acids.
Our Vegan Omega range includes capsules, oils and blended Omega formulas from trusted supplement brands.
Where Does Vegan Omega 3 Come From?
There are different plant-based sources of Omega 3. Foods including flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts and hemp seeds provide ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), an essential Omega 3 fatty acid.
Algae oil is different because it can provide DHA and, depending on the product, EPA directly. This makes algae-derived Omega 3 a useful fish-free option for people following vegan and plant-based diets.
Vegan DHA & EPA Supplements
DHA and EPA are often associated with fish oil, but fish obtain their Omega 3 through the marine food chain. Microalgae can therefore be used as a direct vegan source.
When comparing vegan Omega 3 supplements, check the label to see which fatty acids the product contains and how much DHA and EPA it provides per recommended daily serving.
DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision with a daily intake of 250mg DHA. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart with a daily intake of 250mg EPA and DHA.
Vegan Omega 3 vs Fish Oil
Traditional fish oil and algae-based Omega 3 can both provide long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids, but their sources are different.
Fish oil is derived from fish, while algae Omega 3 is produced from microalgae and can provide a vegan alternative.

How to Choose a Vegan Omega 3 Supplement
When comparing plant-based Omega supplements, consider:
- Type of Omega 3: check whether the product provides ALA, DHA, EPA or a combination.
- DHA and EPA content: for algae-based products, compare the amount provided per recommended daily serving.
- Source: check whether the Omega 3 comes from algae, flaxseed or another plant source.
- Format: choose between capsules, softgels, liquids or other formats depending on the products available.
- Other Omega fatty acids: some vegan formulas combine Omega 3 with Omega 6 and Omega 9.
What About Vegan Omega 3-6-9?
Some plant-based supplements combine several types of Omega fatty acids in one formula. Omega 3 and Omega 6 include essential fatty acids that need to be obtained through the diet, while Omega 9 can be produced by the body.
Whether you choose a dedicated Vegan Omega 3 supplement or an Omega 3-6-9 blend will depend on the type of fatty acids you're looking for and your overall diet.
