Choosing a Liposomal Vitamin C Supplement
Liposomal vitamin C is an alternative to conventional vitamin C tablets, capsules and powders. The difference is in the delivery system. In a liposomal supplement, vitamin C is incorporated into tiny structures made from phospholipids called liposomes.
Research suggests that some liposomal formulations can increase the amount of vitamin C available to the body compared with conventional oral vitamin C. However, formulations vary between products, so liposomal supplements shouldn't all be assumed to perform in exactly the same way.
What Are the Benefits of Vitamin C?
The nutritional benefits of a liposomal vitamin C supplement come from the vitamin C itself. Vitamin C supports the normal function of the immune system, helps protect cells from oxidative stress and helps your body make collagen for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage and blood vessels. It also increases iron absorption and can help reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Liposomal Vitamin C Liquid, Capsules or Sachets?
Liposomal vitamin C comes in several formats, so choosing between them is largely about finding an option that works for you.
Liquid liposomal vitamin C can be taken directly or according to the individual product directions, while sachets and pouches provide convenient pre-portioned servings.
You'll also find liposomal vitamin C capsules, which may appeal if you'd prefer the convenience of a traditional supplement format.
Don't assume that one format is automatically better than another. Instead, compare the amount of vitamin C per serving, recommended directions, formulation and other ingredients.
Is Liposomal Vitamin C Better Absorbed?
Research suggests that some liposomal vitamin C formulations can provide greater bioavailability than conventional oral vitamin C.
That doesn't mean conventional vitamin C isn't absorbed, or that everyone needs a liposomal supplement. It also doesn't mean that greater absorption automatically results in greater health benefits.
We've taken a closer look at the research in our guide to liposomal vitamin C, its absorption and how it works.
How Much Vitamin C Do You Need?
According to the HSE, adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of vitamin C per day, and most people should be able to get the vitamin C they need from a varied, balanced diet.
Vitamin C is naturally found in foods including peppers, citrus fruits, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and potatoes. Supplements provide an additional source but aren't a replacement for a varied diet.
How Do I Choose a Liposomal Vitamin C?
When comparing liposomal vitamin C supplements, consider:
- how much vitamin C is provided per serving
- whether you prefer a liquid, capsule or sachet
- how often the product needs to be taken
- the other ingredients in the formulation
- serving size and number of servings per pack
- how easily it will fit into your daily routine
A higher dose isn't automatically a better choice. The HSE advises that taking more than 1,000mg of vitamin C per day from supplements can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and flatulence. Always follow the directions provided with your chosen product.
