Introduce yourself.
I’m Gerry Scullion and I’m the founder of King of Kefir in 2014. In a previous life I worked in the chemical ingredients Industry and saw first-hand the ingredients been used in food and drinks industries.
What inspired you to join the natural health sector?
Basically, I thought there was a better way to make beverages for people. That avoids the damaging ingredients that I had crossed my path.
Where did you get the idea for your brand?
I was working with water kefir to ferment drinks, and I had called the company Herbel Crest. This really didn’t tell anything of what I was using. I had an interview with the Dublin Inquirer and the Journalist Conal, interviewed me and titled the article the King of Kefir because of all the jars of Kefir in my little Lab in the Chocolate Factory. I thought to myself I’ll have that name as it tells people more of what’s in the bottle.
What makes your brand unique?
We are the only fermented beverage to fully fizz up our drinks in the can through secondary fermentation. Basically, we don’t soda stream our drinks, so don’t need to buy in tanks of CO2. Also means the live cultures ferment the sugars to zero in the can! We don’t use any “flavourings” as they often contain hidden ingredients that could potentially upset the gut health. So, all our flavours are made directly by infusions of the plant ingredients.
What are your company’s core values?
Making clean, natural, sugar free and gut friendly drinks since 2014.
How do you support your community?
We have an employee through the local employability Louth agency, whereby they place people with a disability. He is a real asset to us, as he comes in everyday like he has won the Lotto and really lifts our day with his genuine warm nature and happiness. We also sponsor events locally by donating products where we can.
What has been the most rewarding part of your brands journey?
Knowing that we are in some small way contributing to a better health by giving people options.
What in your opinion makes Irish brands unique?
Tend to be made from the heart.
What is your favourite product from your brand?
It’s between our Organic Hibiscus & Rose or Hopped Culture.
Tell us about something that has shaped your brand?
Customer feedback is probably the most valuable thing. This helps us make changes to improve what we are doing.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
Keep growing to support more local jobs and we will expand our range. We are also going to integrate rainwater harvesting into our products. So, from “Cloud to can” is coming this year.
