What is L-Tyrosine?

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that can be synthesised in the body from another amino acid called phenylalanine. Tyrosine is a very important amino acid and plays a vital role in many important functions in the body.  It is essential for the production of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are brain chemicals, such as dopamine, which controls mood. It is also needed for the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for hair and skin colour. It is also partly involved in the regulation of certain hormones, including the adrenal, thyroid and pituitary glands. Tyrosine can be sourced from foods including chicken, fish, almonds, avocados and milk. Low levels of tyrosine have been associated with low blood pressure, low body temperature, and an underactive thyroid.
