What is Cysteine?

Cysteine is a proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it contributes to building protein. Because cysteine can be synthesised in the liver, it is generally considered a non-essential amino acid. However, a varied diet is necessary to ensure the body is receiving enough cysteine, meaning it is sometimes considered a semi-essential amino acid. Cysteine is very common in supplement form. It is generally in the form of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). The body converts this into an antioxidant called gluthathione, this is needed to fight damaging free radicles in the body. Cysteine can be found naturally in a number of foods, particularly protein foods such as meats, dairy products and wheat germ.
